Art Classes Beside the Sea

Pankhurst Gallery occupies a prime sea-front spot in Lee-on-the-Solent, and its art classes make full use of that location. Led by artist Julia Pankhurst, the gallery runs a steady programme of beginners’ courses and occasional evening workshops designed for anyone who wants to pick up a paintbrush, whether they’ve never painted before or simply haven’t done so since school days.

The core offering is a four-week beginners’ course, scheduled across different afternoons and evenings during the week. It suits absolute beginners as well as those looking for a gentle refresher.

Complementing these longer courses are shorter “paint and chill” workshops held on selected evenings. Each focuses on a single themed piece,such as beach huts or a bluebell wood, providing a relaxed, low-commitment introduction for anyone curious to try a class without signing up for a full course.

No previous experience is required for any of the beginners’ sessions. All materials are supplied: paints, brushes, aprons and canvases, together with clear step-by-step guidance throughout.

Participants are simply asked to wear clothes they don’t mind getting a little paint on. Whatever is created during a session goes home with the person who made it.

The gallery also welcomes private bookings. Artwork, theme and difficulty level can be tailored for groups celebrating a special occasion or for corporate events. Sessions take place indoors, so the weather rarely interferes, and free parking is available nearby after 6 pm, with all-day free parking a short walk further inland.
