Bun Penny responds after zero food hygiene rating in Lee-on-the-Solent
The Bun Penny on Manor Way in Lee-on-the-Solent has received a zero food hygiene rating after an inspection found that major improvements were necessary across all assessed areas.
Inspectors judged the premises under three headings: hygienic food handling, the cleanliness and condition of facilities and buildings, and the management of food safety. In each case the outcome was recorded as major improvement necessary, resulting in the lowest possible score under the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

The management team had been away and, in their absence, the kitchen team had become complacent. Standards had fallen well below what the business expects. Since the inspection the pub has carried out a thorough clean and put procedures in place to keep standards consistent.
Staff have received fresh training and revised supervision. Maintenance work has addressed gaps, cladding, drains and other structural points in the kitchen and cellar. The business also states that a fuller renovation is planned. The Bun Penny occupies a prominent position on the road into Lee-on-the-Solent, a short walk from the High Street and the beach. The building began as a farmhouse and later served as a coaching inn before becoming the public house known today. Its name comes from a quantity of Victorian “bun pennies” discovered during earlier works. The menu centres on traditional pub dishes prepared from local ingredients, with seasonal specials, and the rooms offer both cosy indoor spaces and outdoor seating.
Food hygiene ratings are designed to give the public a clear indication of standards at the time of inspection. Businesses can request a re-inspection once they believe improvements are complete. The rating and the pub’s response remain publicly available on the official Food Standards Agency site for anyone who wishes to check the current position.
