Hovercraft service links Lee-on-the-Solent and the Isle of Wight

A limited summer hovercraft service between Lee-on-the-Solent and Ryde on the Isle of Wight has drawn strong interest from travellers seeking a distinctive way to cross the Solent.

Hovertravel, the operator of the long-established Southsea to Ryde route and the world’s longest-running commercial hovercraft company, introduced the special flights as a trial. The journey takes around 15 minutes in each direction and offers passengers open views of the water and coastline that conventional ferries cannot match. The craft rides above the surface, giving a smooth and unusually direct sense of travel across the water.

The landing point at Lee-on-the-Solent is a steep shingle beach close to the Hovercraft Museum, a location that underlines the area’s historic links with the craft. From Ryde, visitors can spend the day exploring Island beaches, towns and attractions before returning the same afternoon. Those travelling in the opposite direction can enjoy Lee’s seafront cafés, promenade and the museum itself, which houses several historic hovercraft including large passenger models from earlier decades.

Demand has been high enough for additional operating days to be added after the first flights sold out quickly. Day-return tickets are available at different rates for adults, seniors and children, with infants travelling free.

Separate short pleasure flights from Lee-on-the-Solent are also offered on selected dates for those who simply want the experience of riding the hovercraft without making a full crossing.

Because the Lee landing site is a steep shingle beach, the service is not suitable for wheelchair or mobility scooter users. Passengers are advised to wear sturdy footwear and take care when embarking and disembarking.

The trial connects two places with deep hovercraft heritage and gives residents and visitors an unusual alternative to the more familiar ferry routes. For many the attraction lies as much in the novelty of the craft itself as in the destinations it reaches. The combination of a quick crossing, open views and the distinctive character of hovercraft travel has clearly struck a chord with the public.

Whether the route becomes a regular feature will depend on continued interest and operational practicalities, but for now it provides a short-lived and memorable way to travel between Hampshire and the Island.
